Abstract

This article offers a study about the reasons by which restorative justice and restorative practices are nowadays discussed: what
do they restore? With what purpose? The personal dimension of the restorative approach is explored by three fundamental principles: the action-subject separation, the high-level control relationships and support, and finally the construction of a culture that promotes the community’s participation and the authoritie’s transparency. Later, the community’s dimension in a restorative approach is described based on some experiences in the Judicial System and in the Education Ministry of Costa Rica.
Lastly, the text makes a critical discussion related to the 21st century, to global, technological and cultural change, and to the necessity of building a culture of peace with a restorative approach as an answer to the challenges of our time.
